I am a UX friendly, client catching, project planning, coffee consuming, digital designing, info itemizing, content coding, website wizard.
At the end of 2012 I completed my Bachelor of Information Science degree in Multimedia at the University of Pretoria. The degree gave me a wide jack-of-all-trades like skill set, I took classes in everything from hardcore object-orientated programming in C++ and Java, through information architecture, web trends and web development, to design fundamentals and publishing. I believe that it is this broad field of study that gave me the foundation for being able to pull all the elements of web applications together. While studying I was awarded the Golden Key International Society Award for the top 15% of academic achievers in their field of study.
Before that, I did two years in Civil Engineering at the University of Pretoria, despite the fact that I decided it wasn't my cup of tea I don't consider it a waste of time. During those years I took subjects in algebra, calculus and physics which gave me that mathematical and logical thinking advantage over my Multimedia counterparts.
In 2007 I took a year overseas working as an Adventure Instructor on the south coast of England at PGL Travel Ltd. I not only racked up a significant pile of qualifications, including an RYA Power Boat certificate, 6 in-house Rope, Water and Hill Work certificates and Trail Mountain Bike Leader Award, but also gained the illusive life experience by working with of people all ages and nationalities but also developed a new level of patience while working with toddlers.
The first significant qualification, received in 2006, was my Matric Certificate from Stanford Lake College in Haenerstsburg, Limpopo. It is here that I developed my love for the outdoors as well as the educational foundation that would take me to university.
Currently I am doing a Digital Marketing Diploma with Shaw Academy. I believe to be successful in this field you at least need a basic understanding of all the fields related to your own. Hopefully through this course I will be better informed in Digital Marketing and work well with professionals in this field.
Since September 2014 till present I have worked as the Head Developer and Digital Strategist at Paperplay, an online wedding stationery store that also serves as a fully fledged digital agency. As head of development I make all development related decisions, work directly with clients, schedule and prioritise development work, maintain hosting servers, assist on design decisions and social marketing for Paperplay just to name a few. It is here that I have become a jack-of-all-trades.
From November 2012 until September 2014 worked at ThinkTank Creative, a digital agency located in Pretoria, as a junior web developer. While working at the ThinkTank I had been moved up to a mid-level developer as well as serving as web development consultant, front-end specialist, and project planner. My role at the company regularly put me in a position where I worked face-to-face with clients while still being a fully-fledged web developer. Most of my time was spent building Drupal based websites from small to large scale projects including custom development. While there I also single-handedly built fully hand-coded custom applications from the ground up including Bills.co.za, a payment gateway that required the use of PHP making CURL requests to send, receive and process JSON objects from an external resource.
My previous web development position was at Justpixels in January 2012, where I worked for a month during the university holiday as an intern web developer. The position gave me great experience into the working world of web development, allowing me to work on and launch my first project, Share the Love, a valentines campaign to raise diabetes awareness and provide people with a fun user experience for sending friends custom ecards via email or Facebook. The project required a level of working with PHP sessions and Facebook integration.
Before my introduction into digital agencies I work at Exposure Studios as a Promoter and a Promotion Manager while studying between 2009 and 2011. Before studying I worked as Adventure Instructor on the south coast of England at PGL Travel Ltd in 2007. While working at PGL I gave lessons in rock climbing, abseiling, kayaking, mountain biking and archery just to name a few. I am sure it is here that I developed my social skills while working with adults and children alike.
I take great pride in my work, I have examples of web development, visual design, information architecture, Android, Flash and even video. You can see some of my featured work in my portfolio.
